The Saginaw County Medical Society Auxiliary began in 1927 with Charlotte Toshach serving as the first chairman. The Auxiliary quickly became a source of support for the medical profession and its families. It served, even in its earliest years, as a volunteer organization promoting causes and projects related to health care.

In the mid-1990s, the Auxiliary became the Alliance and continued to support community organizations and health education.

The Charlotte Toshach Memorial Scholarship Fund was started in 1950 to help students who needed financial assistance in pursuing a career in the health care field. Over the years, many area students have been helped by the scholarships. Interested individuals should be residents of Saginaw County who have been accepted in a nursing program and have a GPA no lower than 2.79. Applications are available in February from the Saginaw County Medical Society, 350 St. Andrews Road, Suite 242, Saginaw, Michigan 48638. The telephone number is (989) 790-3590 or e-mail at jmcramer@sbcglobal.net. Deadline for applications is April 15. Scholarship winners are announced in mid-May.

The Alliance published a cookbook, Come To Our Table, with proceeds donated to the Childrens Advocacy Council, f/k/a United for Kids. CAC provides diagnosis and treatment for children suffering from the physical and emotional pain of child abuse and child sexual abuse. To purchase a copy of Come To Our Table, please contact the Saginaw County Medical Society office.

The Alliance also hosts its annual Jingle Mingle each December. Over $800 was raised in 2004 and donated to the Mid-Michigan Children's Museum. The American Cancer Society's "Making Strides for Breast Cancer" local fund was the recipient of over $900 raised at the 2005 Jingle Mingle. Over $2,000 was raised in 2006 to benefit Autism and the "Sensory Room" at Arrowwood Elementary in Saginaw Township. The 4th Annual Jingle Mingle raised $1,335 to benefit the Mid-Michigan Children's Museum.

The Alliance is also dedicated to welcoming and assisting new medical families to Saginaw, offering help and friendship and whatever resources are needed to help new physicians and their families become integrated into the community. For information regarding membership in the Saginaw County Medical Society Alliance, please contact the Medical Society office.
