SCMS FOUNDATION - The following Resolution was approved at the October 16, 2007, Membership Meeting: MOTION FOR FUND DRIVE FOR THE SAGINAW COUNTY MEDICAL SOCIETY FOUNDATION - WHEREAS, the Saginaw County Medical Society Foundation is the fundraising arm of the Saginaw County Medical Society; and WHEREAS, the Saginaw County Medical Society Foundation meets annually to review requests from medical students for loans to assist them with the cost of their medical education; and WHEREAS, loans are granted by the Saginaw County Medical Society Foundation to medical students that have ties to the Saginaw community and are likely to practice in Saginaw following their medical education; and WHEREAS, the number of requests have been increasing; and WHEREAS, medical education has become significantly more expensive in recent years; and WHEREAS, the asset base of the Saginaw County Medical Society Foundation is less than $138,000; and WHEREAS, the Saginaw County Medical Society Foundation would like to be able to grant an annual loan of $10,000 to each qualified applicant; and WHEREAS, it takes an average of six to eight years for loan repayments to begin; therefore, be it RESOLVED, that the Saginaw County Medical Society request that ALL physician members of the Saginaw County Medical Society be asked to voluntarily make a tax deductible charitable contribution in any amount (suggested amount is $500) to the Saginaw County Medical Society Foundation. The purpose of the Foundation is: (1) To provide loans to deserving medical students; (2) To assist charitable or educational institutions in the promotion, development and attainment of health careers; (3) To promote the science and art of medicine and the betterment of public health through exhibits and other programs of education, and advisory service to the public on matters of health and hygiene; (4) To promote scientific or medical research for the purpose of alleviating human suffering. Gifts to the Saginaw County Medical Society Foundation may have charitable tax benefits so please consult with your tax advisor for specifics. Checks should be made payable to the Saginaw County Medical Society Foundation and sent to the office at 350 St. Andrews Road, Suite 242, Saginaw, Michigan 48638. Our goal is to raise $172,000. As of 8/25/08, we have received donations totaling $33,525 or 19% of our goal. Thank you to those who have already contributed and we look forward to adding more donors to this list!
